In one day, four lives weave together in unexpected ways. Virgil Salinas is shy and kindhearted and feels out of place in his loud and boisterous family. Valencia Somerset, who is deaf, is smart, brave, and secretly lonely, and loves everything about nature. Kaori Tanaka is a self-proclaimed psychic, whose little sister Gen is always following her around. And Chet Bullens wishes the weird kids would just act normal so that he can concentrate on basketball. They aren’t friends -- at least not until Chet pulls a prank that traps Virgil and his pet guinea pig at the bottom of a well. This disaster leads Kaori, Gen, and Valencia on an epic quest to find the missing Virgil.

Reviews

This story is touching because Virgil, the main character who has been alienated from society, is bullied by the delinquent Chet and goes through hardships, but overcomes it with the help of his friends.

I like this book, because it gives you different views of different people. I didn't think that Virgil should be the one to take Sacred home, because Valencia is the one who has spent all the time with him. I really liked Valencia, because she was determined to help Kaori and Gen find Virgil, even though she didn't really know him. I also like Kaori, because she is very friendly, and her sister Gen, because she is quite funny. I don't like Virgil, because it seems a bit strange, as Kaori says, that he didn't even say 'thank you' after what Valencia did for him. Kaori and Gen say there are no coincidences, and I half believe that, because so many things are linked to each other in this book. I like the parts when characters join together, for example, at the Super Saver, because it was interesting to see the reactions of the children when they meet someone they know well but aren't friends with. I liked all the links in this book, but I don't think there was enough of Chet and maybe even Kaori's point of view. There just seemed to be many of Virgil stuck in the darkness which I found boring.
